A Healthy Dose of Competition… and Help

posters

Socializing and healthy competition are core components of SC. The conference is a means to bring together the smartest and most experienced people in the high-performance computing (HPC) field. While SC has evolved over the years, the focus on bringing the HPC community together has persisted.

There are many ways to connect with your fellow HPC enthusiasts at SC24, and the various modes of competition are a great place to start. Research Posters, Doctoral Showcase, and ACM Student Research Competition each offer a chance to connect with the community while also showcasing your skills and expertise.

If you’re interested in pitting yourself against the best minds in HPC (and learning from them as well), take a look at the following program descriptions.

Research Posters

research posters

The Research Posters program allows scholars, researchers, and students to present innovative concepts and groundbreaking findings in the field of HPC. It also provides a platform for work that could be presented at future HPC conferences as a foundation for papers. The Best Poster Award is chosen by a small ad hoc committee, based on the caliber of the study itself, as well as the presentation by the researcher.

This year, in addition to the customary unpublished work, the program is accepting posters that feature previously published research. Authors are required to indicate whether any of the research on their poster has been published and explain why they chose to present it in poster style. Through this approach, the conference hopes to provide scholars a chance to broaden their partnerships and reach a new audience. However, these posters will not be in the running for the Best Poster Award.

Submissions must include the poster itself, an 800-word narrative in IEEE style, and an optional Artifact Description Appendix. Multimedia components like movies and websites may be embedded through QR codes to improve the presentation and offer more data or resources. Because reproducible science is vitally important, the conference encourages authors to submit reproducibility information via the Artifact Description Appendix.

Research Posters will be displayed in the Georgia World Congress Center Tuesday–Thursday, November 19–21, 2024. Posters must be mounted between 2 pm and 5 pm on Monday, November 18, and will remain on display until 5 pm on Thursday, November 21. Each poster will have a designated display board with a QR code linking to the Technical Program Archives, where attendees can access the most updated version of the material. The Posters Reception on Tuesday evening provides an opportunity for presenters to discuss their work with attendees and answer questions.

Doctoral Showcase

doctoral showcase

The Doctoral Showcase at SC24 affords a unique platform for PhD students nearing the completion of their doctoral program to present a comprehensive summary of their dissertation research. It is an opportunity to showcase the entirety of their doctoral work, including previously published results, through a poster presentation and a short talk. The Doctoral Showcase is open to PhD students who plan to graduate by December 2025.

A “thesis canvas” (poster), list of relevant research artifacts (publications, software, etc.), and an abstract (250 words) are required for a Doctoral Showcase submission. The poster format permits multimedia components (videos, websites, etc.) to be embedded using QR codes, and it specifies a display board size of 4 ft (high) by 6.5 ft (wide) / 1.2192 m (high) x 1.9812 m (wide) provided by SC. While the final version of the poster may be altered later, a draft version must be submitted. Accepted entries will be invited to showcase their work with a poster display and as part of a special Doctoral Showcase session at SC24.

Expert committee members examine the submissions for the Doctoral Showcase in a peer-review process. For accepted applications, the Technical Consortium on High Performance Computing (TCHPC) may support a portion of the travel expenses. To attend and present at SC24, presenters must register for the Technical Program. The final thesis canvas, presentation slides, and abstracts will all be archived in the SC24 Technical Program Archives. Doctoral students can present their extensive dissertation research, network with possible employers, and gain knowledge of cutting-edge HPC projects at the Doctoral Showcase.

ACM Student Research Competition

acm src

The ACM Student Research Competition (SRC) at SC24 provides a platform for undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their original research work.

The competition involves three rounds: abstract submission, poster presentation, and finalist presentation.

In the first round, students submit an extended abstract describing their research problem, background, approach, results, and contributions. A committee of experts reviews the abstracts and selects finalists based on the content quality.

The second round is the poster session held during SC24. Selected students present their research through posters and interact with conference attendees and judges. Judges evaluate the posters based on criteria such as oral and visual presentation, research methods, and significance of contribution.

In the third and final round, a subset of students is chosen to give a 10-minute presentation followed by a Q&A session before a panel of judges. The judges assess the students’ knowledge, research contribution, and presentation skills. Three winners are selected in each category (undergraduate and graduate), receiving cash prizes of $500, $300, and $200 for first, second, and third place, respectively. The first-place winners advance to the SRC Grand Finals, an online competition among winners from various ACM conferences.

The SRC provides students with opportunities to gain visibility, make connections, sharpen communication skills, and receive feedback from experts in their research areas. It is an internationally recognized venue for students to showcase their work and compete for prestigious awards.
