Come explore exercises that will jump-start your students’ understanding of how artificial intelligence (AI) works in the context of high-performance computing (HPC) and what is needed to make it more trustworthy, ethical, and reliable. This workshop is aimed at K-12 teachers of any subject. To make a future where AI is a positive tool for society, we need every kind of thinker to work on this challenge. The exercises that we will do could be used in a social studies class, a science class, or a computing class.

Student Local Engagement ChairMatthew Fuentes, Everett Community College
The workshop will introduce AI and dig deeper into neural networks and their applications through both unplugged and computer-based activities. Participants will be given the opportunity to try the activities and brainstorm how they can be implemented and expanded in their classrooms. Alongside learning AI fundamentals, activities will dive into understanding the biases and limits of AI as a tool. Attendees will also hear from an AI researcher about how AI is used in scientific research and high-performance computing, from medical imaging to climate simulations.
Attendees will walk away with activities and resources to introduce AI and HPC into their classrooms and begin important discussions around artificial intelligence and society. Attendees must bring a laptop to participate in hands-on activities.
This is an in-person event open to high school and middle school teachers.
Lunch will be provided.
Transportation must be arranged by the participant.
The conference will reimburse mileage and parking up to $300 per participant with documentation.
